So... In Portland, the small business and artist community is the most amazing thing to be a part of.
We all support each other and push each other to keep moving forward and be on top of our game.
MapleXO is lucky enough to share a building with some rad businesses.
Portland Design Works (PDW) is one of those rad businesses. They design and make the coolest bike accessories ever! Not to mention the 2 owners I know, Dan and Erik, are two of the most legit, awesome dudes I know.

The devastation in Haiti has effected the lives of 3 million Haitians and effected the hearts of millions all over the world.
It's unbearable to think about the tragedy and pain those people have endured.
We feel for Haiti. We have hope for Haiti and want to do our part to make a difference.

As we send our jewelry to stores around the world (that sounds crazy... "the world!" wow), we tend to come across shops that amaze us to the point that we can't help but brag about them. Greenward, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is one of those shops.

Woodward West Skate Camp has been saving boards for MapleXO to turn into jewelry. The UPS man brought me 2 boxes from them today.

Best selection of boards to make jewelry from EVER!!! Woodward Skate Kids have good taste.

I pulled out my favorites for jewelry making:
The Deluxe boards are always so rad. We've got Tim Ward's board in there...

This one came from Bucky Miller. It's a krooked Mark Gonzalez / Clayton Brothers colab board. I've never been so stoked on a used board! I'm half debating hanging it on the wall... but it would make such rad jewelry... we'll see.

Girl / Chocolate Boards.... polka-dots and patterns always make for some good-looking jewelry.

And Sid Melvin threw in his last Santa Cruz board... every ply is colored!!! So good.

Well... keep skating and we'll keep creating. Thanks to everyone who helps MapleXO save skateboards from the landfill by hooking us up with their boards.

Thanks to one of MapleXO's favorite stores (not just in Portland, but in the entire world) Radish Underground, MapleXO can be seen in this year's Willamette Week Holiday Gift Guide

For those of you who haven't really heard about our recycled skateboard wheel earrings that were featured here, I'll give you a little run down:
Skateboard wheels are made from polyurethane. Pretty gnarly stuff. It's a petroleum based product that takes thousands and thousands of years to decompose. Skateboarder Buzzy Sullivan put it in perspective for me by saying this,"It's crazy to think that every skateboard wheel that was ever made, still exists in it's form somewhere here on earth." And to really break it down, think about this... when skateboarders ruin just one wheel, they typically switch out all four (not because they're excessive, but because it's way awkward to skate mismatching wheels with uneven wear). So tons of wheels that end up in the landfills are still perfectly good wheels and we knew there was some way we could turn them into jewelry. After endless experiments with cutting, melting, sanding, stretching, and dyeing the wheels... our Recycled Skateboard Wheel Earrings were born.

Since MapleXO started in 2006, we've learned a lot about skateboards, woodworking, and jewelry making. Nearing the end of 2009, we thought it would be fun to see just how far we've come. Check out the difference between these earrings we made in 2006 and a new batch of earrings from 2009.

Of course we have to give credit where credit is due. A big help to us learning the ropes of woodworking has come from an amazing Portland woodworker and artist, Paul Sykes. He owns Sykes Wood Fenders which is a company that makes beautiful wooden bicycle fenders!
His fenders are incredible and he makes amazing furniture as well. He practically just built a church! Take a look at that link to see the photos from that project. In one way or another, Paul has had a hand in the production process of almost every product made by MapleXO. With out his guidance, we don't know where we'd be today. Thank you Paul (and Elaine) for your amazing support!

MapleXO has had quite an obsession with obtuse angles lately.

We made some earrings similar to this about 6 months ago, but we didn't feel like they showed off enough of the original colors of the skateboard, so we put our thinking caps on and our power tools to work and re worked them into these babies!
The backside shows the original graphics, artwork, and scratches from the skateboard, and the flip side shows the amazing colors and layers that once hid below the grip tape.
